Information about the region
Located in Wadi Taym, a long fertile valley lying at the foot of majestic Mount Hermon, overlooking a deep amphitheatre from which a brook flows to the Hasbani, Hasbaya is a charming town with historical attractions. The town of Hasbaya is the center of the Caza. It is one of the most important and oldest towns of the Mount Hermon area. This mountain peak, also called Jabal al Sheikh, rises east of Hasbaya.
Hasbaya is an important historical site, but little of its ancient monuments survive. The oldest standing ruins date to the Crusader period. The town’s centerpiece is a splendid citadel, which is part of the historic Chehabi compound that includes several medieval houses and a mosque. The Chehab emirs once ruled the entire area and lived inside the compound for eight centuries. Today, the ownership of the site is shared by about 50 branches of that same family, some of whom still live there permanently.
Hasbaya keeps its traditions alive and its workshops are still producing traditional clothing such as abayas, caftans and turbans.
