Ashes - A solo exhibition by Guilain Safadi

Opening reception: Thursday November 15, from 6 pm to 9 pm

Artlab Gallery is proud to present its first solo exhibition by Guilain Safadi.

The works presented in Ashes are the most recent outcomes of what has the artist been experiencing since the beginning of the Syrian revolution. In this collection, Guilain paints the reflections of his current condition in black and white. The artists describes that he decided to name this exhibition Ashes because he always paints his memories with their pictures, people, stories and symbols after they have been burnt through time and have become ashes. He also sees the memory of his country consumed on daily basis under the shells and bombs in burning cities. Everything turns into ashes even his sadness. Guilain says: “I couldn’t paint in colors for all that surrounds me is colorless, only scorched memories come to me and I try to gather their shreds on my canvas before they are blown away by the wind.”

Guylain Safadi was born in 1977 in Suweida, Syria; he is a graduate of Damascus University Faculty of Fine Arts. His style is characterized by his strong color contrast and actual subjects. He has participated in many exhibitions of which: French cultural center Damascus 2002; French cultural center Suweida 2006; Arab cultural center Suweida 2006. His collection “Syrian Sorrow” is now on a road show in Berlin, Rome, Nottingham and Paris.
