Origin of the name:

In the Syriac language the word “Assia” means ‘Medical Practitioner”. It expresses the humanitarian character of a healer monk who lived in the fourth century AD and cared for patients in his area. The Monastery bore the name of its manager too and came to be known as the Saint Assia Monastery.
