Poshya Kakil and Sinéad O’Donnell first met in 2009 as collaborative artists working on a project entitled PAVES. This was a year-long project and the overall aim was to build trust through creative dialogue and performance art between five from different countries. Poshya was never permitted to travel outside her country for the project so she participated, mainly via Skype, from her home in Erbil.
During the last three years Poshya and Sinéad have worked together further, developing performance pieces that deal with invisibilities, identities, barriers, borders, boundaries, gender and understanding in relation to each others’ cultures and beliefs. This work has mainly taken place online through media such as Skype, Facebook, email and SMS and the artworks have shaped into poetry, sound, video, installation and performance art. Gradually, the collaboration of Poshya&Sinéad gained acclaim and they were invited to take part in events at The Bluecoat, Liverpool (DaDafest), Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff (A-N & AXIS), Bbeyond, Belfast and the FIX biennale of Performance Art, Northern Ireland.
This journey to Beirut is part of CAUTION, a project led by Belfast-based artist and curator Sinéad O’Donnell with artists SylvetteBabin (Montreal, Canada), Mariel Carranza (Los Angeles, USA/Lima, Peru), Paul Couillard (Toronto, Canada), PoshyaKakl (Erbil, Kurdistan Iraq) and ShiroMasuyama (Tokyo, Japan).
The project has allowed the artists to explore their limits physically, artistically and geographically. Through CAUTION they seek to break some of these boundaries and cross borders but also to work with the edges of their abilities. The artists have sought to find the extreme points at which their differences make communication difficult and the resulting work reflects the unusual strategies they have found to exchange ideas.
