Niemeyer in Lebanon | Exhibition and Lecture

The Embassy of Brazil in Beirut and the Brazil-Lebanon Cultural Center (brasiliban), in collaboration with Wassim Naghi Architects and Niemeyer Heritage Foundation Tripoli, have the pleasure to invite you to the opening cocktail of the exhibition ‘Niemeyer in Lebanon - concept, and development of the Tripoli International Fair’

Oscar Niemeyer was a Brazilian architect considered to be one of the key figures in the development of modern architecture in the 20th century. Niemeyer was best known for his design of civic buildings for Brasília, a planned city that became Brazil's capital in 1960, as well as his collaboration with other architects on the headquarters of the United Nations in New York.

In 1962, Niemeyer was commissioned by the Lebanese government to design a complex for international fairgrounds in Tripoli, Lebanon. The work was interrupted at its mid-construction by the Lebanese civil war in 1975. The fair, which is currently known as the Rashid Karameh Fair, consists of 15 buildings and monuments built during the mid-twentieth century and remains today incomplete.

Wassim Naghi is President of the Architects Branch at the Order of Engineers and Architects in Tripoli and is involved in the restoration of the Rashid Karami International Fair. Naghi will present a lecture on the history of the fair and its importance.

The exhibited photos and documents come from the files of architect Wassim Naghi, with the participation of photographer Anthony Saroufim. A fair model and a 500-kg sculpture by Nabil Helou will also be exhibited.

A vin d’honneur will follow.
