Timeless by Fanny Seller

Art on 56th is pleased to announce Timeless, a solo-exhibition of works by Fanny Seller.
A conservator and restorer of paintings, the artist focuses on memory and loss. Her creative approach incites her to revisit the past and reexamine phases of her life and experiences, where recollections meet fiction. Her research deconstructs images in order to recreate ideas and fragments of reality. Preserving and reworking images, she gives a new life, as well as a new narrative, to her materials. By delving into the theme of migration and transformation, the artist forms visual testimonies between physical and emotional realms.

Timeless gathers a series of paintings that depict 42 children in shades of gray tones. The youth Seller depicts pose in front of a blazing sky and confront the viewers with their powerful gazes, filled with mischief, nostalgia and vulnerability. They each carry a toy or a dear possession, such as a doll, a blanket or even plastic pistols. The weapons are rendered in fluorescent colors, as if the artist wished to shine the light on their disconcerting presence. The message soon becomes clear: children are victims of exploitation and political instability. Their playgrounds have become corrupt and are collateral damage to the violence that surrounds them. Using an array of diverse media (such as photographs, paint and drawings) Seller seems to translate the Lebanon’s diversity onto the canvas.

Seller wishes to invoke peace with her Timeless exhibit and tell the story of the war through lost childhoods.

Exhibition from February 5, 2016 till February 27, 2016.

Opening hours: Tuesday - Friday 10:00 - 7pm - Saturdays 10:00 - 6:00 pm.
